I dance with the tension between the moving image and the concept and creation of tangible, handmade quilts and textiles. Playing with light in my creations of meditative, poetic and handmade montages, I take the past and fuse it with the present, drawing upon the historical desire to investigate and hold on to the ephemeral. Personal conflicts and grief are represented by kind surfaces.
My work acts as a breath of fresh air in a stuffy room, a gift and invitation to enter into a soul searching space. The beginnings of my work find their breath through a memory that I have stumbled upon, often something I have captured on video and am rediscovering. My practice involves gathering a collection of moments that spark something within me. The idea then takes flight, hovering and dipping into my writing of poetry to wrestle with my ideas further, sketching, painting and experimenting with scale and process.
Engaging and creating through constraint, materiality and experimental improvisation is prominent throughout my work. Contesting the binary between abstraction and representation, I explore personal histories captured through the lens of an 8mm film camera, encountering material ready to be woven. I sketch with light in the darkroom, reconnecting with the refreshing serendipity of traditional processes. I use printmaking and transparent fabrics in a way that combines both the hazy and clear recollections of memory, especially connected to the home. There is an undeniable sense of intimacy fused through my work, as my purpose in creating is to offer the viewer an invitation, a chance to touch the soul just like a good conversation.
I want my art to make the viewer step back as well as draw in close, for there to be a reflection and stillness for a moment. I aspire for my art to offer a gentle entry, a soothing, longing softness that invites connection to something greater within— the meditative hum of the projector quietly encircling. Releasing and expressing hardships through a therapeutic lens is my approachable way to draw connection. I desire for my work to be meditative, igniting, moving or soothing— like therapy.
